Not wanting to repurchase a whole new wardrobe, Barbara applied to join Greenwich Adult and Community Learning’s Beginners Sewing Course in 2021 to learn how to adjust existing clothes and repurpose fabric she already had to make new outfits.

Starting off with more basic projects – including a drawstring bag and apron – Barbara’s confidence soon began to grow and it wasn’t long before she was developing new skills, like learning how to trace patterns and using toile to ensure a good fit, and making more complex clothing like tunics and skirts.

With a few self-made garments under her belt, Barbara then decided to challenge herself further by making button through dress and a jumpsuit to wear on holiday. Both of which were a great success!

Barbara said:

“I’ve learned that precision and patience were needed for pattern making and if things went wrong not to give up but unpick and try again! I’ve learned to be confident and take on new challenges. I’ve gained new skills including inserting invisible pockets and sewing on patch pockets. A year on I feel I can take on more and more challenges.

“The garment I am most proud of is my kimono. I took a simple pattern and combined two different fabrics, edging the joins with pink bias binding.”

Barbara explains that one of the great joys of Greenwich Adult Community Learning is the culture of learning and mutual support:

“Our tutor inspires us all to challenge ourselves, try new things and be brave and confident in all we do. All the students support each other, give each other tips and give honest feedback. I personally have helped others, passing on what I have learnt and helping them with their own projects. It really is a joyful class.”
