Jasmin arrived in the UK from the Philippines just three years ago. Although she had been taught English at school, she was shocked on arrival at how different the language was spoken in the UK. This led her to believe that she would need extra tuition and acquire a much better level of both written and spoken English.
This year, Jasmin is studying for the Business BTEC Level 2 Diploma based at our Orpington Campus. The course is very in-depth and practical and requires a very high level of communication skills.
Jasmin says: “At first, I was a little petrified. I would sit in lessons and try to understand, as best I could, what was being said by my tutors and fellow students. I couldn’t really join in as much as I wanted and it made me feel like I wasn’t contributing as much as everyone else.
“My tutors introduced me to the Hub and I decided to spend as much of my free time as possible in there. The specialist tutors are brilliant and helped me so much. Within just a few sessions I could understand things much easier and this boosted my confidence enormously. I’ve recently completed my levels 1 and 2 foundation certificates and now I’m about to sit my full GCSE English Language exam.
“I just need to spend more time revising and putting the finishing touches to my exam skills. The tutors help me with this as well. I can’t thank them enough. They are amazing.”
Jasmin will return in September 2017 to begin work on her level 3 course. She then plans to go to university and study for a degree in accountancy.
