17 awards were presented to students in a variety of categories – including FE, HE, SEND and ESOL students of the year, as well as prizes for work experience and student ambassador of the year. There were special Principal and Chair’s awards too, recognising outstanding commitment and contribution to the college.
The ceremony included a keynote speech from Khadijah Mellah – an inspiring young woman who broke down barriers to become the first hijab-wearing jockey in a British horse race and winning the Magnolia Cup at just 18 years old. Jola’s Jukebox set the mood for the drinks reception and there were also two fantastic dance performances by students from the College's Greenwich campus.
Addressing the winning students and their families, CEO and Group Principal, Dr Sam Parrett CBE, said: “To finally be able to come together in person to celebrate our students’ achievements is absolutely wonderful. It’s been such a challenging time for so many people but the success stories we have heard tonight shows some amazing determination and resilience.
“Further and higher education provides a route to so many exciting jobs and opportunities. Our fantastic tutors and staff work hard to support students, but it is the drive of the student themselves that leads to the most success.
“My colleagues and I are incredibly proud of all our winners tonight – and you should be very proud of yourselves. You are role models to your peers and an inspiration to staff here at LSEC.
“Thank you for helping to make London South East Colleges such a fantastic place. Keep working hard and striving for success – your futures are all extremely bright.”
