Siddharth Singh first came to London South East Colleges back in 2012 to study for a BTEC Level 2 ICT Certificate at the Bromley Campus. On completion, and after a further year re-taking his GCSE English and maths exams to improve on his previous results from school, he decided to set off and see some of the world. He travelled to Japan by himself and while there studied a Japanese language course; learning enough to hold a conversation before finally returning to the UK.
The following September Siddharth was back at the College to take on his Level 3 ICT Software course and from there, it was full-steam ahead en route towards a career in either website design and development or accountancy.
Siddharth is currently studying the second year of his Computing Foundation Degree at the College’s University Centre. His third year will see him complete a full honours degree validated by the University of Greenwich.
“The transition from my level 3 course was very smooth and straightforward,” said Siddharth, “almost as if I was simply progressing into a third year of the same course.
“Obviously, I’m now into the realms of studying at a very advanced level but because of the amazing tuition I’ve always experienced here, I feel that I’m getting everything I need to remain on course and make it to my final year at university.
“I decided to stay local and stick with my familiar surroundings and the tutors who I know and trust so well. Here, I have everything I need - from superb facilities and IT, to the amazing Learning Resource Centres (LRC) and remote access for studying at home. To add to that, I can travel in easily from my home and don’t have to spend all of my money on rented accommodation.
“Studying for a degree in IT gives me so may career options for when I graduate. IT specialists will help to power the rapidly expanding tech industries and the growth in automation and artificial intelligence (AI) in all sectors. It will give me a wide ranging set of skills that I could take with me into a variety of careers - I’ve recently been thinking of extending my training post-graduation to become an accountant - but that’s in the future and for now I’m working very hard to ensure I do very well on this course.”
Barry Spencer is one of Siddharth’s tutors and one of the College’s e-learning developers. He has supported his journey through the levels and will be sorry to see him leave at the end of this academic year. He said: “Siddharth is a very talented student who will be very successful in whatever career he chooses. I was delighted that he decided to stick with us last year despite the overwhelming amount of choice there is out there in universities all around the UK. The benefits of staying local, however, are many and all of our students can count on the great support from their tutors and the dedication to keeping them on-track and focussed on achieving as highly as possible.”
