Charlie, 18 from Orpington and classmate Josh, 18 from Bexley joined the Creative Media (Journalism) Level 3 Extended Diploma in September 2016 and have ambitions to progress to higher level courses or into suitable apprenticeships.
Charlie hopes to go to university and study for an NCTJ Diploma in Journalism on completion of his course at London South East Colleges’ Orpington Campus. This will enable him to encompass the skills required of journalists working across all media sectors.
Josh is busy searching for an apprenticeship with a media company that will allow him to study for a degree while earning a wage. Ultimately, he would like to work as a sports journalist for one of the big TV companies such as BBC, Sky, BT or ITV.
Since beginning his course, Charlie has taken the opportunity to engage with a number of different media disciplines. He says: “I’ve been given an introduction to the journalism profession by tutors who have years of experience and insight. The course teaches us about what we can expect and what is expected of us. We get to see the bigger picture as well as picking up the relevant skills to be taken serious in a very competitive industry.”
Devoted West Ham Utd fan and blogger, Josh has been writing for the Read Sport website for a number of years now and has improved his written and research skills since being on course. He says: “I’ve definitely increased my scope over the past couple of years and feel like I have a number of different options open to me going forward. I am looking for the type of career that will be closely associated with my interests and enable me to use my knowledge of football and other sports.”
If you think you have what it takes to become a media professional or build a successful career in the creative industries, we’d like to hear from you. We have a great range of courses to get you started. Come along to one of our open events.
