On Tuesday 23 January, Kier Construction Careers Hub held the first in their series of workshops at our Holly Hill Campus.
The workshop focused on Safety, Health and Environment (SHE). Students demonstrated a good knowledge of health and safety and took part in a number of activities, including 'spot the hazard' where they were shown images of sites and had to identify potential hazards.
Representatives of Kier Construction expressed the importance of construction safety by showing a variety of building site examples, ranging from poor to excellent health and safety measures.
Scott Bridge, SHE Advisor; Onyx Hamilton, Graduate Design Manager; and Nazmin Begum, Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator, delivered an excellent workshop for students including potential routes into careers at Kier Construction. The students thoroughly enjoyed hearing about their personal career journeys and experiences.
Scott Bridge from Kier Construction said: "It has been a pleasure to be involved in the Kier Construction Careers Hub, having had previous experience of working closely with students. It's important to open doors into construction early so that students understand what the expectations are. I enjoy influencing and educating young people, this is a vital part of the construction industry and definitely needs more attention."
Joshua Sowsbery, studying for a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction said: "It's exciting to be involved with such a big company as Kier Construction. I am interested in pursuing a degree apprenticeship at the end of my studies. This will give me the opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge, and give me a head start in construction."
Dan Bogle, Senior Lecturer Construction Trades said: "The team from Kier inspired the students with their own career stories showing the progression that could be achieved in construction. The presentation from Scott, Onyx and Nazmin showed how safety, health and environmental laws can be applied to a real site situation and gave the students an insight into site management work".
Thanks go to Dan Bogle, Juliette Hanks, Fred Asiedu, Yvonne Wright, Dani Alexis, and Trevor Noble for their work in delivering this event for our students.
Another workshop from Kier Construction is scheduled for February on Design and Planning.
