Jade Richards, 19, from Sydenham, has used her time at the College very intelligently and taken every opportunity to gain valuable work experience, take part in employer challenges and competitions and learnt how to network with those in prominent and influential positions within the business world.

Jade signed up to the Speakers for Schools website and has so far been successful in gaining a one-week virtual work experience with Price Waterhouse Coopers, taken part in a virtual insight evening with international law firm Reed Smith as well as a virtual insight day with the NHS entitled ‘Meet the People Behind the Mask’. In addition, she has acquired other stunning opportunities with Santander and the Barclays Beyond program.

Getting ready to return to College next week, Jade said: “I’ve got so much out of the different ventures and incentives offered outside of the classroom by companies and organisations that partner with the College; it gives me that ‘something extra’ that can’t be acquired by simply sitting in class.

“I want a career doing something I know I’ll enjoy - something that will keep me fulfilled and immersed for a long time. I have been able to try several different things by simply writing to companies and introducing myself to them, asking about routes into different jobs within their sector. Employers tend to like this, they like people who are inquisitive and keen, people who are willing to listen, learn and put in hard work.

“At the moment, I’m very interested in working for a banking group in financial risk services, maybe becoming a manager, then a company vice president and even president one day - who knows where all this can take me? All I know is, it’s helped me to realise the importance of networking, learning to be an eloquent speaker and communicator, being confident and above all, believing in myself and my own abilities. It really isn’t that difficult.”

Careers tutor, Teresa Riordan is very impressed with Jade’s work ethic and enthusiasm, she said: “Jade is always the first to put herself forward for opportunities offered by the Work Placement team, including with Lloyds Banking Group. She was nominated by the team for the College’s Star Awards last year and won a highly commended award in the work experience category. An accolade she thoroughly deserved.

“She already works part-time for Sainsburys as a Customer Service Assistant but has added to her CV a wealth of experience over the last two years. Jade is an ambassador for work experience and fully understands the benefits this can bring to her future prospects.”
