Mia started her apprenticeship with the LED lighting manufacturer and distributer after leaving school in 2016. Though keen to continue her education and training and gain further qualifications, she didn’t relish the thought of spending another two years at school and revising relentlessly for exams.
“I learn better by actually knuckling down to working on something real and with proper deadlines and outcomes,” she says, “this is a great way of acquiring competencies and skills.”
“My employer is a family run business and I get to work with people from all departments on a number of different projects. I really do feel that I have an important role to play within the company and that I am valued. The on-the-job training has worked so well and my college work has improved because of this.”
Mia’s duties involve answering phone calls, customer service, e-marketing, preparing quotes and price lists, customer and supplier verification, market research and communications. She attends our Bexley (Erith) Campus one day a week where she is learning ICT skills in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Rachel Pring is a Director and co-founder of the company which began trading back in 1999. She says: “Mia is our first ever apprentice and because it has worked out so well, we intend to take on another later in the year. She has been so successful here and fits into the team perfectly. She is keen, her attendance and punctuality is superb and she has a willingness to learn and isn’t afraid to ask questions.
“London South East Colleges has been very easy to work with and we have a very relaxed and thriving relationship with Mia’s assessor who monitors her progress and gives us recommendations and solutions should we need them.
“The apprenticeship programme is a great way of placing young people into active companies and give them the opportunity to learn with industry experts. Mia has benefitted tremendously from being here and we are very impressed with her. She is fast becoming an accomplished all-rounder and I hope she decides to stay with us when the apprenticeship comes to an end.”
