Jack beat off twelve other hopefuls from the College and will represent London South East Colleges, as well as his employer Sidcup-based KH Engineering Services, next February.

The contest will involve being handed a set of drawings and instructions to set up and install three complex electrical circuits, test them and ensure all electrical regulations and health and safety requirements have been met in the quickest time. He will compete against many other electrical apprentices from around London and the south east.

Launched in 2010, the contest gives students the chance to be recognised for their hard work and skills. It’s a great opportunity for tutors, employers, industry leaders and manufacturers to get involved and support the next generation of electricians.

Jack, 19 and from Gravesend in Kent, is half way through his apprenticeship and works on a range of reactive maintenance projects for a contract with Southern Trains. He installs and maintains electrical systems in stations between London, Brighton and Bognor Regis.

Jack says: “I’m proud to have been chosen by my tutors to take part and I’m going to give it everything I have. I’d love to reach the finals; it would be a massive boost for my career. To have got this far is great but now I want to go even further. I have always been a highly practical person and I’m accumulating lots of new skills every day.

KH Engineering have provided me with lots of practical training courses accredited by IPAF and PASMA with the College giving me the theoretical knowledge to feed the practical skills I have acquired so far.”

His tutor, Ben Sheridan says: “Jack’s skills are exceptional and he is one of the best apprentices we have had for many years. He is particularly impressive for someone studying at this level (3) and I see a very bright future for him. Taking part in SPARKS will be a great experience. In the new year, Jack will take on a programme of intensive training to give him that extra confidence. He is definitely up for the challenge and that is what counts the most.”
