Chris Dyson at lectern

This week, London South East Colleges welcomed award-winning architect Chris Dyson to deliver a Landmark Lecture as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

A month-long celebration of architecture and community spaces, festival selected Bromley as one of its destinations for 2024 and part of its 20th year.

Explaining his specialism in heritage and modernity, Chris Dyson shared his educational and career history with college students, staff, and members of the public. Outlining some of his most notable projects both at a local level and on an international scale, he spoke about how the field of architecture has changed over the course of his career due to developing trends and sustainability goals. Also celebrating 20 years, of Chris Dyson Architects, Chris took guests through 20 projects from the last two decades of his career.

Sharing his advice for those who may consider entering the profession themselves, Chris said: "Architecture is more than just designing buildings - it's about community, business skills, patience, working with a broad team. Pursuing a career in architecture and design can be challenging, but staying passionate and dedicated to your craft will help you succeed in the long run."

Following the lecture, guests were invited to view a display of artwork from college students and alumni. Bexley Campus student Hanna Korotkova's work formed the basis of the exhibition. Originally from Mariupol, Ukraine, Hanna's work reimagines buildings and spaces in her home city that have been destroyed or damaged due to conflict.

Reflecting on her art, Hanna said: "My journey as a war artist began in 2022 when my country got invaded and my home destroyed. After hard but successful escape of the war zone, art became a way to express my feelings and show the pain that could not be said. My favourite medium was always acrylic paint, but now I am trying to use all different sorts of materials."

This event was developed in collaboration with Orpington 1st.
