Apprentices are eager to power the homes of the future

Both are busy polishing up their practical skills and revising hard for theory exams that will enable them to complete their Electrotechnology Installations Systems and Equipment NVQ Level 3 qualifications.

For the past three years, they have been undertaking intensive on-the-job training with their employers, as well as attending our Holly Hill Construction Skills Campus one day per week.

“It has been truly immense,” says 24-year-old Mauro from Greenwich, “a real rollercoaster of a ride since beginning in 2015. The time has gone so quickly and I can’t believe just how my life has been transformed.

“Before I took up the challenge of an apprenticeship, I’d worked as a waiter, labourer, cleaner, and numerous other low-skilled jobs. One day, I received an email from GLLaB concerning an apprenticeship scheme, which further down the line led to an opportunity with Brenbar Electrical Services and decided to go for it. There were a number of different hurdles to get over during the application process but it was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse. Before I knew it, I was working on-site at a number of Berkeley Group housing developments learning how to install wiring in new-build houses all over London. One day is spent at London South East Colleges learning practical techniques, regulations and theory as well as health and safety practices.”

Jack, 26 from Eltham was in a similar predicament to Mauro prior to his appointment with Wilton Electrics Ltd, another sub-contractor to Berkeley Group.

Jack says: “Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve been involved in lots of different housing and commercial developments around south London and found myself doing wiring, installation and metal working amongst many other duties. I’m putting into practice the things I’ve learnt at College and by using the skills I’ve learnt on such a regular basis, I’m becoming more and more confident and accomplished. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed that I’d be able to perform the complex electrical tasks that I now do day-to-day. Soon, I’ll be able to boast of being a professional and I can’t wait to get started as a contractor.”

Their tutor, Ben Sheridan says: “Mauro and Jack have just a couple more hoops to jump through before they reach their goal. They have both put in an enormous amount of work to get this far and soon they’ll be flying. London South East Colleges have many years’ worth of expertise in the building services trades and can, with the help of reputable employers who invest in their employees, turn willing novices into industry professionals.”
